About Megan

Megan Baker’s oil paintings are in an ever-changing state of coming in-and-out of being, where fragmented and gestural figures are continually interrupted by the immediacy of the paint. This oscillation of time intercepts the way the painting is perceived, the surface flickering between a recognisable form and a sweeping brushstroke. As if at the precipice of shifting, they capture a motion caught somewhere set amongst the in-between, of dream and reality, of the hidden and found, where the subjects appear to be at a point of forming or on the edge of disappearing. Often imbued with a sense of pensiveness, the paintings float in an elusive depiction that is never fully recovered. 

Born in the UK (1996), Baker graduated from the prominent school Central Saint Martins in 2018, when she received the Kate Barton Painting Award and the Cass Art Prize. Taking part in multiple group shows in London, Baker has been shortlisted for the Clyde and Co Art Award and also came runner up at the Hix Art Award, 2019. In 2022 the artist featured in the group show ‘Nymph’ and GJG, and ‘Eye of the Collector' art fair in collaboration with Christie’s.

• Megan has been selected to join Byrdcliffe's Artist Residency in the Catskill Mountains. Byrdcliffe is one of the oldest creative communities in the world, attended by artists such as Bob Dylan, Philip Guston, and Eva Hesse.
