About Louis
Louis Barbe is a French painter currently studying at the iconic École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, France’s most prestigious art school.
Regarding his work, Louis states:
“To date, my practice has revolved almost exclusively around painting, a daily task in which I seek in the material the trace of a cryptic, intimate diary, featuring my loved ones, strangers, objects and places. I feel I understand what surrounds me in this way, with painting as my confidante. I see my practice as a testing ground, where the rational becomes charged with fantastical potential. Alternative proposals in the face of reality. The initial intuition is nourished by a search between instinctive assemblages and everyday elements, and I seek contact and the clash of images.
The moment of practice is important for me, as a spectator of these appearances, when the material takes hold of the subject, distorts the flesh and leaves the impression that the painting is digesting. With intuition that it responds to its own logic, an intrinsic sense of balance. The initial idea of the painting bends to the logic of the material and its expressive character.
My research tends towards a sculptural approach to painting, using flochetages and impasto, trying to create internal agitation through the material, freezing a moment revealing intuition. I'd like to capture the ambiguity between matter and the sensation of the known. Capture the dazzling distortion of an emotion.”

Why we like it
Louis is one of the most talented french painters of his generation.
At the age of only 22, Louis’s style is already unique, mature, and perhaps even a little macabre in its pointed attunement with our current era.
While still in the depths of his studies, Louis has already exhibited with M+B gallery this year (and during Frieze LA, no less)! Based in Los Angeles, M+B is regarded as a talent-spotting gallery known for discovering some of the hottest contemporary artists over the last decade.
Louis is constantly pushing his practice, and NAAC acquiring his work at such an early stage in his career is a strong move, demonstrating our confidence in his future achievements.
Highly lauded, Louis has already been featured in more than five exhibitions, including a solo show, since 2023.
