Graduating an MFA from Central St. Martins in London in 2008, Olise is interested in society as a construction and the role of the Woman as a Construction. Mie Olise works in painterly strokes and large scales. Painting since the age of 15, she has taken a long and curved journey – actually starting out working with women figuration with a feminist angle in her teens, a circle has been forming over the last years. Muses Having Fun are paintings based on thoughts of woman-hood, in history, art history and personal present life. In the works there are strong references to history; both suffragettes, women who tore off the corset to ride a bike, play tennis or music, as well as a series of paintings of a more fantastic scenery, with women (girls or witches) simply taking off on dangerous animals, being wild, fierce or just adventurous. All living their life as subjects, experiencing life from the inside and out. A lot of the titles of the works Olise borrows from earlier works of women artists, the titles are picked out of hundreds, and suit the works; yet the titles serve to pay a hommage to these amazing Women. My personal aesthetic evolved from nostalgically bright colors that hearken back to sensibilities of my youth. Because of this persistent interest, I purposefully adopt palettes and compositions from cartoons and other visual graphics. The vocabulary of images I use are idiosyncratic, but also serve as evidence of my biography. Growing up in a Vietnamese-American household, I was exposed to both East Asian, as well as Western kitsch. My paintings utilize the language from both visual cultures, and this hybridization is emblematic of my identity. Loc Huynh (b. 1992 Austin, TX) earned his BFA from Texas State University in 2016. He did some graduate work at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and received his MFA from the University of North Texas in 2020. Berrío received his BFA from New York, University (2005). In recent years, he has participated in group and solo exhibitions around the world for galleries and institutions in USA, Latin America, Europe and Australia. He has also completed a number of murals, with the most recent installations throughout the city of Miami. Berrío has been awarded numerous awards including The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2018 and 2022, in 2019 he was awarded The Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation Grant, in 2023 he has been the recipient of a South Florida Cultural Consortium Grant, and the Miami Individual Artist (MIA) Grant. He has been a Fountainhead Studio artist resident since 2019. He continues to evolve his practice, investigating new processes and mediums, while challenging contemporary expectations with his prodigious compositions. Hermes Berrío, transitioned to a global environment from early on, living between Bogota, Florence and New York, enabling him to expand his boundaries while exposing him to new opportunities. Ever since moving to Miami, he has grown his artistic career, finding inspiration through the city’s rich landscape and cultural diversity. His practice captures the significance of everyday life, relating the grand scope that emphasizes both the mundane and the extraordinary. His urban style embedded within mixed media utilizes materials ranging from oil and aerosol, to textiles and gold leaf. In addition to carrying out a physical examination, Berrio conducts a conceptual survey, with reality as the foundation of his practice, creating a vibrant narrative and a personal reflection on the world. He continues to find inspiration in these unusual and yet commonplace experiences, by exploring the complexity of such simple moments and rendering them on a monumental scale. Berrio’s paintings are at once deeply personal snapshots of his people and his city, and a sublimely laid out perspective that feels universal and unpretentious, his pieces are documentary-like in nature, derived from the artist’s photographs. Reaching beyond the simplicity of such fundamental daily happenings, Berrio’s paintings present a monumental vision of urban life. Regarding his work, Louis states: “To date, my practice has revolved almost exclusively around painting, a daily task in which I seek in the material the trace of a cryptic, intimate diary, featuring my loved ones, strangers, objects and places. I feel I understand what surrounds me in this way, with painting as my confidante. I see my practice as a testing ground, where the rational becomes charged with fantastical potential. Alternative proposals in the face of reality. The initial intuition is nourished by a search between instinctive assemblages and everyday elements, and I seek contact and the clash of images. The moment of practice is important for me, as a spectator of these appearances, when the material takes hold of the subject, distorts the flesh and leaves the impression that the painting is digesting. With intuition that it responds to its own logic, an intrinsic sense of balance. The initial idea of the painting bends to the logic of the material and its expressive character. My research tends towards a sculptural approach to painting, using flochetages and impasto, trying to create internal agitation through the material, freezing a moment revealing intuition. I'd like to capture the ambiguity between matter and the sensation of the known. Michael works with painting. His work explores the fluidity of the human form and inner life. Drawing on his personal experiences and Nigerian heritage, Igwe’s paintings are a meditation on selfhood, often referencing the nonlinear storytelling tradition of "Iko-Nke Annang." His process emphasizes experimentation and primal gestures, allowing each piece to serve as a reflection on form, subjectivity, and transcendence. Igwe’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Africa, Europe, and the United States. He holds a BFA from the University of Benin and is currently pursuing an MFA at Columbia University School of the Arts.
